MANILA, Philippines – The wait is finally over as PBA re-opened in ala NBA bubble style tournament setup. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel dropped NLEX Road Warriors, 102-92 and TNT Tropang Giga survived Alaska Aces, 100-95 on Sunday double-header, October 11 in Angeles City, Pampanga.
After 7 long months of no Philippine basketball due to the COVID-19 pandemic, PBA fans can once again watch their favorite teams and players live on TV.
With NBA’s restart success, the PBA board has decided to resume the All Filipino Cup with its own “bubble” tournament arrangement at Angeles University Foundation in Angeles Pampanga.
On March 8, less than a week before the national lockdown was imposed, PBA opened it’s 45th season where San Miguel Beermen jotted its first win versus Magnolia Hotshots.
Today, the long wait is over and PBA is officially back.
To begin with, TNT with its new moniker “Tropang Giga” faced the Alaska Aces.
Tropang Giga debuted with their new big man JP Erram from the NLEX Road Warriors. Despite Erram’s addition, TNT had a rough start as the Aces threw a 17-point big lead at them.
Veterans Jayson Castro and Roger Pogoy stepped up and easily cut the humongous advantage to a deadlock, 48-48 at the half.
The game was super close where the teams were separated by no more than 2 possessions in the entire 2nd half but it was TNT who prevailed,100-95 where almost half of the century points came from Roger Pogoy (45 points).
In the 2nd game, crowd favorite Ginebra San Miguel squared off with NLEX Road Warriors.
Ginebra started with its young guns headed by Stanley Pringle and Scottie Thompson. The Gin Kings are playing in the “bubble” without Greg Slaughter who opted not to play in this conference.
Just like the 1st game, the Ginebra-NLEX duel was tight. The Gin veterans took over the floor but the resilient young core of NLEX prevented them from getting away and tied the game at 48 after the first 2 quarters.
It took Ginebra squad 2 full periods to find their old lethal forms and leave NLEX behind with a balanced scoring distribution from the seasoned and budding kings.
NLEX Road Warriors lost their confidence after scorer-center JR Quinahan got ejected from the game after committing a flagrant foul 1 and technical foul in the 1st and 3rd quarter respectively.
Since Quinahan’s ejection, Ginebra didn’t give NLEX any chance to recover and wrapped up the game with a 102-92 convincing win.
PBA games will be aired live on One Sports and PBA Rush on Cignal and live streamed at www.pba.ph, One Sports Facebook page.
Games will be shown LIVE on TV5 every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
