MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte is set to announce the new chief of embattled Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) on Monday night, August 31, Senator Bong Go said.
Go added the president will reveal his choice during his weekly address to the nation.
UPDATE: Former NBI director Dante Gierran is new PhilHealth chief
Retired general Ricardo Morales earlier tendered his resignation amid the allegations of mismanagement and corruption in the country's insurer agency.
Duterte had asked Morales to resign due to his unstable health condition.
PhilHealth Executive vice president and chief operating officer Arnel De Jesus temporarily took over Morales' position.
However, De Jesus was also unable to attend Senate and House hearings on PhilHealth issues saying he had heart ailments and diabetes.
Duterte vowed to go after corrupt PhilHealth officials saying he would spend his two remaining years in office eliminating corruption at the state-run insurance corporation.
“One of the things that — few things that I can do in the remaining two years of my term, uubusin ko ito ‘yung panahon ko to work on the cases for people who are involved in the PhilHealth,” Duterte said.
The President has ordered an investigation into allegations of corruption in PhilHealth following the testimony of a former antifraud officer who said corrupt officials may have pocketed around P15 billion last year.
Congress and the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) are conducting separate investigations.
Reports said that Duterte was looking for someone who was not corrupt and had managerial skills in insurance and health service.
Duterte is also expected to announce new community classifications for the entire country tonight.
