MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte revealed on Tuesday, August 25, that his doctor warned him that his Barrett’s esophagus was “nearing stage one cancer”.
The doctor advised the president not to drink alcohol to avoid worsening his ailment.
"Ikaw Duterte, 'wag ka nang uminom, because 'yung Barret mo, nearing ka na sa Stage 1 cancer," Duterte said in his address to the people held in Davao City Monday night but aired Tuesday morning.
According to the United States' National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Barrett’s esophagus is a condition in which tissue that is similar to the lining of the intestine replaces the tissue lining of the esophagus. Doctors call this process intestinal metaplasia.
"People with Barrett’s esophagus are more likely to develop a rare type of cancer called esophageal adenocarcinoma," the institute added.
The 75-year-old president admitted in October of last year that he has Myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular condition which affects his eye muscles.
Duterte also revealed having various medical conditions, including frequent migraine attacks and Buerger’s disease, an inflammatory condition of the blood vessels.
The president has been staying in his home city of Davao since August 3. Palace clarified the rumours that Duterte flew to Singapore for a medical emergency.
"There is no truth that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte left the country," Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement on August 16.
