MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte approved the recommendation of Department of Education (DepEd) to move the opening of classes to October 2020.
In a memorandum released by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Friday, August 14, it was decided to defer opening of classes to October 5, 2020 (Monday) instead of the August 24 schedule.
This is pursuant to Republic Act No. 11480 as signed in July 2020, amending RA 7797, mandating the Secretary of Education to recommend to the chief executive the adjustment in the school calendar in ‘times of national emergency’.
"The DepEd is hereby instructed to ensure that all preparations have been made for the smooth and successful virtual opening of classes for Academic Year 2020-21," the memorandum said.
"We trust that this is the final adjustment of the school opening. Even with the implementation of MECQ, we will use this time to make the necessary adjustments and ensure that all preparations have been made for the successful opening of classes for School Year 2020-2021," DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said.

Briones also gave message to the parents, students and teachers: These are very difficult times. Things change on a day-to-day basis and we have to adjust to these situations. If things get better we can also adjust in a positive way. We thank really the parents for their patience.
The DepEd Chief also instructed schools outside the MECQ areas to continue their orientations, dry runs, and delivery of learning resources so that we will be ready for the opening of classes on October 5.
Several senators including Francis Tolentino, Sherwin Gatchalian and Bong Go, expressed their sentiments earlier urging the Education department to move the resumption of classes to a later date citing concerns as raised by the stakeholders.
