Philippines COVID-19 tally breaches 11,000-mark; recoveries near 2,000

The Philippines on Monday breached the 11,000-mark in its tally of new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases with 292 new cases recorded, bringing the total to 11,086.

Of the new cases, 162 or 56 percent are from the National Capital Region, 74 or 25 percent are from Region 7 or Central Visayas, and the rest are from other regions.

Meanwhile, total recoveries near 2,000. There are 75 newly recovered patients, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,999.

The number of new deaths reported meanwhile is at 7 or a total of 726 COVID-related fatalities as of Monday.

President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to decide today, whether to extend or relax the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) imposed in Metro Manila and other COVID-19 high-risk areas, which is supposed to last until May 15.

The decision will be announced after Duterte's meeting with the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).

Roque added some parts of the National Capital Region maybe placed under general community quarantine (GCQ) where some restrictions in movement will be eased.

Globally, more than 4.1 million people have so far infected with the novel coronavirus, killing over 280,000. Around 1.4 million have recovered from the disease.
