MANILA, Philippines – Michael Bublé recently fulfilled his grandpa’s dying wish to give his house to the Pinay caregiver who cared for him and his wife for about 8 years. The gesture went viral, especially because Michael made sure to renovate the house to update the old home into a stylish modern abode for the Pinay caregiver, identified only as ‘Minette’.
It was back in the 1970s when Michael’s grandpa, Demetrio, built the house with his own hands. So, it was actually extra special to the family. Moreover, Michael admitted that this house holds so many memories for him, but he’s not holding on to its sentimental value because it would be a big help for Minette whom they consider as family.
“The greatest moments of my life happened here. The songs I learned and the style of music I fell in love with, they all happened here,” Michael explained.
“I think my grandpa would be thrilled knowing that we could maybe lessen the burden a little bit in allowing Minette to continue helping her family without it being so hard on her.”
The Canadian singer also explained that Minette is more than just a worker for them but has already become part of the family as she cared for his grandparents for nearly a decade.
“Minette doesn’t keep any of the money that she makes. She’s got a lot of family in the Philippines and she takes that money and she sends it all back,” Michael said.
“Minette is this really compassionate, kind, empathetic human being with a great sense of humor, a great zest for life, who sort of never did anything for herself. She became family almost instantly. I can only imagine what it’s going to mean to her.”
Because the house is over 50 years old, Michael wanted to make sure that it is safe for Minette to live in. He also wanted to update its style to suit the modern times. So, he enlisted the help of the so-called ‘Property Brothers’, Drew and Jonathan Scott.
They renovated the house, updating its 70s design to a stylish modern home. The result is something that still retained the old charm of Demetrio’s house but now renovated to suit Minette’s needs.
The Pinay caregiver had tears in her eyes as she received the wonderful surprise from Michael.
“It is so much, really, really so much. I have no words right now. It hasn’t sunk in yet. It's beautiful, beautiful. Grandpa thank you so much,” Minette said.
