MANILA, Philippines – They might be young and relatively inexperienced, but several young mayors have proven that age is just a number. They showed that their young minds could actually bring fresh hope to their cities and towns, many of whom had been under the rule of political dynasties.
The following are just some of the young mayors who wowed everyone with their impressive response to COVID-19:
Vico Sotto
He’s the hottest topic in town, with the name ‘Vico Sotto’ remaining in the headlines for weeks. Even before the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the Pasig City Mayor had been routinely disinfecting schools and distributed disinfecting kits to barangays.
He also bought and deployed disinfection drones to help curb the spread of COVID-19. The city distributed 400,000 food packs with rice and canned goods to affected families, released a P55-million financial assistance program for affected drivers of various public transports, started a ‘Mobile Palengke’, and provided free rides to frontliners after public transport was banned.
Bryan Celeste
The mayor of Alaminos City, Pangasinan is just 23 years old but when COVID-19 struck, he quickly secured relief goods for 25,000 families – and even personally helped in the repacking and distribution of the bags!
To help the farmers, he bought their unsold produce. He purchased over 10 tons of fruits and 730kg of vegetables from the farmers. These were then repacked and handed out to Alaminos residents.
Donya Tesoro
Known as ‘The Pretty Mayor of San Manuel’, she is currently being paired by netizens to Mayor Vico, but just like Vico, she also claimed that she is too busy and has no time for love. Many believe they make the perfect match as they both have good looks and were greatly admired in their COVID-19 response.
And while she is most likely getting advice from her dad, former Mayor and incumbent Vice Mayor Benjamin “Bening” Tesoro, Donya is making a name for herself with her quick response to the crisis. She even helped pack and hand out the relief goods.
Francis “Iskul” Juan
A teacher by profession, 37-year-old Mayor Iskul of Bustos, Bulacan, quickly launched an ‘online palengke’, converted the municipal gym into an equipped COVID isolation facility, and sent relief goods to affected constituents. While many towns and cities haven’t distributed any relief goods yet, they are ready to hand out their second wave!
Isko Moreno
The list of impressive young mayors won’t be complete without adding Isko who quickly made an action plan. Aside from sending out relief goods to affected constituents, Isko also provided Vitamin C and B Complex for senior citizens, the most vulnerable sector to the deadly COVID-19.
Isko released a medical budget to purchase several disinfection units, air purification machines, and gallons of disinfection solution. The city also put up 2,000 tarpaulins to raise awareness on proper hygiene to help combat the deadly virus.
