MANILA, Philippines – It is so difficult to get sick these days because people are often too scared to help. Recently, someone died of a heart attack after collapsing at a sidewalk but nobody tried to help because they were too scared she might have COVID-19.
Later identified by friends as Andrew ‘Drei’ Aguila, the transgender was first reported to be a woman who collapsed at the sidewalk near the Boy Scout Circle at the intersection of Timog Avenue and Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City.
In a heartbreaking video posted by Facebook page Fliptop, the victim could be seen lying face down on the brick-lined sidewalk but nobody dared to help. A barangay tanod arrived but did not touch the victim. The guy taking the video could be heard saying that the victim’s hands and nails were turning blue/violet, leading many to believe that the woman had a heart attack.
Another guy moved closer, identified to be the guard of the Mercury Drug store located near the spot where the woman collapsed. The guard moved the umbrella to check the victim’s face, but he also did nothing else.
Here’s the heartbreaking video:
There were a number of people who passed by the area or were just curiously watching from a distance, but still no one dared to help. With the virus having killed 297 people in the Philippines and affecting a total of 4,648 as of April 12, no one could really blame these spectators for not helping.
Someone was finally able to call emergency services to report the incident. She was later taken in an ambulance but declared dead from acute myocardial infarction. That means that she had a heart attack. Friends and family later shared that Drei has rheumatic heart disease. She does not have COVID-19.
Here’s another video, taken when several ambulance units arrived to take her:
Many were greatly saddened by the incident, claiming that had someone helped her, she might have survived the heart attack. Rest in peace, Ms. Drei…
