MANILA, Philippines – A woman was blasted by her friend for posting photos of her birthday celebration amid the reality of people being hungry in many places. But this friend got the receiving end of netizens’ anger for being rude to the birthday celebrant!
Ever since COVID-19 showed up, a lot of people have lost their jobs and are stuck, hungry, at their own homes because they don’t have enough money to buy food. While the government is doing its best to provide them with food and monetary aid, there are still too many that don’t have anything much to eat.
Some people think that it is insensitive for netizens to post food now that so many people are going hungry.
But is that really an absolute rule and aren’t birthdays special exemptions to the rule? After all, the birthday celebrators already had to deal with having quarantine birthdays and no visitors, why can’t they post their little party as celebration for another year added to their lives? That is what Rachelle Rosales tried to share when she got bashed by a friend after posting photos of her birthday celebration.
Rachelle celebrated her birthday last April 19 and shared photos of food she got for the little party. Tagging the people who gave her the food, Rachelle thanked them for their generosity as she celebrates another year in her life.
But one of her friends called her insensitive and ‘mayabang’ for supposedly flaunting so much food amid the crisis that many other families are facing. This person ruined the happy post, further telling Rachelle that though there’s nothing wrong if the family prepared her food for her birthday, what’s wrong is that she posted it on Facebook.
Netizens got angry at Erico, telling him that Rachelle has the right to post whatever she wants because this is a free country – and it was her birthday after all. Rachelle later defended herself, saying that she’s been giving many donations to frontliners but kept quiet about it on social media, yet she only posted about her birthday to thank those who gave her food for the private party!
