MANILA, Philippines – Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian reminded some netizens that Venezuela is different from Valenzuela!
This came after uncomprehending netizens commented on ABS-CBN's Facebook post about a religious procession in South American country Venezuela despite the lockdown due to coronavirus disease pandemic.
With photos from Reuters, ABS-CBN shared:“Sa bansang Venezuela, tuloy ang prusisyon ng Nazarene of St. Paul kahit may nationwide quarantine na ipinatutupad doon dahil sa #COVID19 pandemic.”
Some netizens mistakenly thought the procession was in Valenzuela, a city in Metro Manila and got mad at him.
Gatchalian, who trended for wrong reason, immediately reacted to comments of netizens.
"So ang daming nagagalit sa akin dahil dito.
Hindi ko alam na ako na din pala ang pinuno ng bansa na Venezuela.
Mga sirs and ma'ams, Mayor po ako ng dakilang lungsod ng Valenzuela. Hindi po ng bansa na Venezuela."
Gatchalian then re-tweeted a meme, which contains popular and iconic lines from Star Cinema's "Four Sisters and A Wedding."
He also seized the moment to lecture on the history of Valenzuela.
"Pero seriously...our city is called VALENZUELA not VENEzuela...our great city is named after one of our revolutionary HEROS, Dr. Pio VALENZUELA....who's zeal and love for our country is what we strive for everyday in this great city of ours," he said.
