"Iyong ECQ is up to April 30, 11:59 pm. Ito ang rekomendasyon ng IATF (inter-agency task force) na tinanggap ni Pangulong Duterte at inannounce na niya kagabi. Matapos ang kanyang announcement, vinerify namin – ang enhanced community quarantine is extended until 11:59 pm of April 30," Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said.
The memorandum dated April 7, extending the Luzon-wide lockdown was officially released today.
"All concerned agencies are therefore directed to continue implementing existing guidelines relative to the ECQ during the period of extension, without prejudice to this Office's discretion on the relaxation of the implementation of the ECQ in certain areas, or the grant of exemptions in favor of certain sectors, as public health and food security considerations may warrant," the memorandum from Malacañang Palace said.
Meanwhile, Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo asserted that Duterte did not downplay the threat of COVID-19 in the beginning and was merely acting based on the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“Sa madaling sabi, depende po kasi ‘yun sa sitwasyon. Kaya si Presidente noon sumusunod lamang siya sa takbo ng patakaran ng World Health Organization at sa mga nakikita niya sa kanyang kapaligiran,” Panelo said in a virtual press briefing.
This came after the reaction of the public on the statement of the president in his Monday's address. Duterte said he warned the public from the “start” regarding the threat of the coronavirus.
In his February 3 address, Duterte said “The response of the people from the initial reports of coronavirus was also hysterical when there was really no need for it actually. If there is really a virus going around, why do you have to be hysterical?”
