MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte declared Monday the suspension of classes in all levels in Metro Manila from March 10 to 14 (Tuesday to Saturday) to prevent spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
The announcement was made during the press briefing after his meeting with the task force on emerging infectious diseases.
Duterte added that cancellation of classes is needed to assess the incubation of COVID-19 and reduce the number of cases.
“The virus is so virulent that even contact, mere talking and handshaking could place you in jeopardy and we are trying to avoid losses, especially lives,” Duterte said.
As of Monday night, the Philippines has recorded 24 cases of coronavirus.
The president also declared state of public health emergency throughout the country through Proclamation Number 922 dated March 8, 2020 following the confirmed cases of local transmission of the virus.
