MANILA, Philippines – Having been paralyzed for 11 years, Lyza Queen Escala was quite worried about her wedding gown as she planned to marry Aljohn Louie Escala. But designer Bea Fuentes Balajadia surprised her with a customized wedding gown that actually included the wheelchair in the design.
Though she was still using the wheelchair for the entire event, people who didn’t know she’s on one would think she’s just sitting on a chair throughout the wedding. That’s how her gown was so beautifully and skillfully done by Bea who made sure that even if she is disabled, she can still wear the gown of her dreams! Isn’t that fantastic?
According to Lyza, the wedding gown was her biggest concern throughout the wedding preparations.
“Of course, na-co-compare ko ‘yung sarili ko sa ibang brides na magaganda talaga ‘yung gown. And I think every bride's dream din is to be the most beautiful on her wedding day. Hanggang sa nag-self pity na ko na ‘why do I have to be a wheelchair-bound person?’ I even hated my wheelchair during that time,” Lyza admitted.
“Gusto ko kasi talagang gown is ‘yung malaki at mahaba but then naisip ko impossible na ‘yun sa kagaya ko.”
But the gown designer knew exactly what to do to transform her dream wedding gown into reality, with adjustments to cover the wheelchair so she would look great on her wedding day even if she sat on one.
Lyza shared that during their first meeting, Bea showed her the initial idea for the gown. She admitted that she wasn’t able to picture out how this gown would look like once she wears it. After all, she would still just be on the chair, anyway.
The ‘malaki and mahaba’ gown design would not fit her, she thought. But the designer had a big surprise for this wonderful bride. On the day she wore the gown for fitting, she couldn’t help but cry as the customized dress fit her wheelchair!
“Nagulat ako sa sobrang ganda tapos naiyak na ko. ‘Yung feeling na para sakin imposible ko na masuot yung ganung klase ng gown. Pero posible pala,” Lyza said.
Thanks to Bea, Lyza married Aljohn at the Church in the Sky Parish in Taytay, Rizal last December 14, 2019, wearing the gorgeous dress she had always dreamed of…
