MANILA, Philippines – A lot of netizens were left scratching their heads after the vice mayor of Talisay, Batangas said that he wants Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) officials to change their ‘opinion’ over Taal’s impending eruption so his constituents can come back home! But the Police Chief of Calabarzon half-jokingly said he would throw the vice mayor into Taal Volcano as ‘sacrifice’ if the residents return.
Charlie Natanauan, the vice mayor of Talisay, went viral over his statements that the officials of Phivolcs are not God and could not predict when the volcano would erupt. He wants them to change their ‘opinion’ about the volcano’s possible big eruption, saying that it would hurt their economy.
“What if the volcano will only erupt after 1 year?” Natanauan asked. He believes that it would be very difficult for the people to wait a year at the evacuation centers in many far-flung areas when they could just go home, clean up, and get on with their lives before the possible eruption happens.
“Ang plano ko as a vice mayor, ay ako ay humihingi ng kuwan kay Presidente Duterte, yung opinyon ng Phivolcs ay medyo baguhin, kasi masyado niyang pinalala ang sitwasyon ng balita,” Natanauan said in a phone patch interview with Noli De Castro on DZMM.
“Sabi niya kasi masyado daw malakas itong putok na susunod, nagi-ipon lamang. Opinyon niya ‘yun.”

The volcano is too small to cover their town with lava as the material won’t even be enough to cover the lake, Natanauan lectured, defending his statement on DZMM in this video:
‘Sacrifice’ to the volcano?
Calabarzon police chief Brig. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. was not happy with the vice mayor’s statement, particularly because they are in the front lines and are trying their best to keep the residents away from the towns on lockdown.
“Nakikiusap po kami sa aming mga kababayan na kung pwede po sumunod tayo sa batas na ipinapatupad ngayon. Especially in the lockdown areas wherein we are now prohibited to enter within the 14-kilometer radius,” Danao said.
“Especially po dun sa harapan ng crater, ang dami pa pong tao dyan na pumipilit na gustong pumasok pero ginagampanan po natin ang ating trabaho hangga’t kaya po natin.”
But he has a special message to the vice mayor.
“Kay vice mayor po ng Talisay, nakikiusap po ako sa inyo bilang isang vice mayor ng lungsod o ng isang town dyan na please tumulong po kayo, wag na po kayo mag-udyok na pabalikin ‘yan. Kasi po pag ‘yan ay may nangyari, dahil sa pagu-udyok ninyo, pag nakita pa kitang buhay, iaalay kita sa bulkan na ‘yan,” the chief added.
