MANILA, Philippines –“Heart-breaking win”. Azkals completely dominated Timor Leste, 6-1, but failed to make it to the next round due to goal difference on December 4, 2019 at Binan City, Laguna.
Just like their previous games, the young Azkals were in superb offensive mode. The only difference was, the Filipino booters scored too early in the game.
Veteran Stephan Shrock caught a perfect pass from the midfield and outran the entire Timor Leste Team for a 1-0 lead at the 3:13 of the opener.
The Filipino-German Midfielder has been instrumental since the inauguration of the tournament. After his goal in this game, he had a few more clean shots that didn’t go in and some good dimes to fellow veteran Amani Aguinaldo.
At the 20th mark, Philippines dodged a major bullet as Timor Leste made an equalizer goal but was nullified due to an offside violation.
Just a couple of minutes before the 1st half ended, the Shrock-Aguinaldo connection added another goal to the scoreboard. Stephan Shrock passed from the corner left and Amani Aguinaldo completed it with a header.
Prior to Azkals’s second goal, Shrock was slapped with a yellow card making it 2 consecutive penalties in 2 games and could be suspended in the next game which is the semifinals if Philippines pushes through.
Azkals offensive onslaught continued in the 2nd half. Again, it was Stephan Shrock who orchestrated the play and gave the Philippines its 3rd goal through Mar Diano.
Despite the scoring streak, Azkals needed 4 more goals at least to advance to the semis as Cambodia was way ahead of the Philippines in terms of goal difference in their bracket.
Although maintaining its possession in the entire match, the Philippines staled at 3-0 with 20 more minutes left.
At the 70th mark, Dylan De Bruycker added another one to the scorebook and after a while, Amani Aguinaldo bagged his 2nd and 3rd goals consecutively to make it 6-0.
Philippines’ hope to march on to the next phase abruptly diminished as Timor Leste finally scored with just a few ticks remaining on the clock.
The match ended with Philippines winning 6-1 over Timor Leste but failed to advance to the next round due to game difference.
The top 2 teams in group where Philippines belong are Myanmar and Cambodia and both will get into the next stage by way of goal differences.
