MANILA, Philippines – Senator Christopher "Bong" Go assured nurses that a salary increase will happen for them in 2020.
Go said that along with his commitment to push for an improvement in the quality and healthcare services, he would also look out for the welfare of health workers in the country.
Speaking at the 39th foundation anniversary and 38th annual convention of the Mother and Child Nurses Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MCNAP) at the Manila Hotel, Go said he wished more Filipino nurses would opt to work in the country than go abroad.
“Malaki ang diperensiya ng suweldo sa abroad at dito, pero nais kong dito na kayo magtrabaho para hindi kayo malayo sa mga pamilya ninyo," he said.
The senator added that as the chair of the Senate Committee on Health, he was one of those who defended the budget increase for the Department of Health (DOH) during the budget deliberations. He said the increase would significantly help increase the government nurses' salary by next year.
"Just this week, the Senate approved on third and final reading the 2020 budget. We made sure that the DOH would have enough budget for its operations and health care professionals would not lose their jobs," Go said.
He added that he opposed the proposed slashing of budget. Go said, "Pinaglaban ko po ‘yan kasi magkakaroon sana ng slash sa hiring ng mga (health) workers. Hindi po ako pumayag."
Go continued that the proposed P4.1-trillion 2020 budget has a special provision that includes the fund for the implementation of upgrading of the nurses' salary grade. Following the recent Supreme Court decision, government Nurses 1 should be under salary grade 15 or around P30,531 while Nurses 2 belong to grade 16.
“We allotted 3.173 billion pesos to upgrade the salaries of Nurses 1 and 2, in accordance with the recent Supreme Court decision,” Go said.
In an earlier interview, Go promised that the enactment of the new salary grade for government nurses would apply as soon as the nation budget gets approved next year.
"This is a long overdue compensation denied to them. Hindi na natin sila paghihintayin pa. Magkakaroon na sila ng increase sa sweldo as soon as January of next year," Go said.
