MANILA, Philippines – In a very rare occasion, Northport Batang Pier blew out Barangay Ginebra by 34 points and took Game 1 of their best-of-five semis series on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Southeast Asian (SEA) Games is now over and it’s now time for PBA to resume the hard court action starting in the Governor’s Cup semifinals.
For the first semis game, it will be Brgy. Ginebra up against the league’s dark horse team, Northport Batang Pier.
At first, Brgy. Ginebra got away with a decent number of lead but Northport came back and stole the show with the help of import Michael Quals.
To summarize the opener, both reinforcements slugged it out to gain an advantage and to increase their team’s chances to draw the first blood in this series.
22-20 is the score in favor of Barangay after the first quarter.
Quals continued to sizzle hot in the 2nd with the aid of Christian Standhardinger in the backcourt. Quals dropped a number of long bombs to widened their gap versus Ginebra.
The Gin Kings tried to catch up but couldn't find their rhythm in this quarter. Compared to Northport, even its local stepped up and contributed to their team.
Before the first half ended, Michael Quals hit another three pointer for his 27th point of the game. 51-39 in favor of Northport Batang pier.
It looked like Ginebra had quite of a powwow with Coach Tim Cone in the dugout as the players stormed back in the 3rd quarter.
Gilas Pilipinas guards Stanley Pringle and LA Tenorio started to wax hot from the three point territory and little by little got closer to Northport. Under 5 minutes of the third, the Ginebra Kings found themselves behind by just a half shot.
Michael Quals who was hot in the 1st half slowed down drastically in the 3rd quarter but his local teammates led by Christian Standhardinger and Garvo lanete provided support and the reason why they managed to bring the lead by double-digit anew.
Batang Pier held onto 78-68 advantage entering the final canto.
Northport locals carried onto the 4th period with the scoring momentum on their side. With over 7 minutes remaining, the lead ballooned to 21 points.
Qual’s three point shooting diminished in the 2nd half. But his team almost never felt it because the locals took over the offensive task from him.
With 4 minutes left on the clock, Coach Tim Cone surrendered to Coach Pido Jarencio as he pulled out his aces and brought in his 3rd unit.
With Ginebra 3rd-stringers on the floor, Garvo Lanete took advantage of the Kings’ weaker defense and drained multiple triples to seal the game 122-85 and booked game 1 in favor of Northport Batang Pier.
