MANILA, Philippines – Veteran broadcaster Noli de Castro earned mixed reactions from netizens after he was caught commenting on Efren “Bata” Reyes’ Southeast Asian (SEA) Games win.
The seasoned ABS-CBN’s broadcaster became a trending topic Saturday evening after he was caught on camera making a short comment on Reyes’ SEA Games award.
On his nightly news program, TV Patrol, De Castro was informed that Reyes was defeated by his Vietnamese opponent Dinh Nai Ngo on Friday. Despite the loss, Reyes is already assured of bringing home a bronze medal.
Right after the live interview with TV Patrol reporter Willard Cheng, who was in New Clark City, De Castro was caught on camera asking, “Bronze lang?”
The short comment has earned mixed reactions from netizens online. Some were appalled with the “tactless” comment while some defended the broadcaster saying he seems genuinely surprised.
A netizen recorded De Castro’s comment as asked the netizens to weigh in on their opinion.
A netizen said De Castro did not belittle the billiards legend and was only surprised.
Another echoed the same reaction and asked other frustrated netizens to give De Castro a break.
Among those who were offended by De Castro’s comment even went personal with their response.
Some said we should all be proud of our Filipino athletes, no matter what medal they bring.

he looks like he said it out of surprise. not really belittling efren. people just wants to cancel someone so bad w/o knowing the story.— Lana (@lesyeuxdelanaa) December 6, 2019

Noli de Castro looks shocked kaysa sa nagmaliit. He was obviously looking at someone and confirming if bronze lang talaga nakuha ni Efren Bata Reyes thus the reaction. Wokeninam talaga ang cancel culture na mga pa woke nag judge agad wala naman alam kundi kumuda agad. pic.twitter.com/tflCGiopQf— Mareng YA⛄❄ (@AmiYbz) December 6, 2019

And now, 'Noli de Castro' is trending. For the wrong reason. We should be proud of ALL our athletes. They bring us honor despite all the difficulties, including lack of funding. To say #BronzeLang disrespects Bata who has given his best years to his sport.— Jane Uymatiao (@philippinebeat) December 6, 2019
