MANILA, Philippines – "Typhoon Ursula cannot stop us from going to the theaters to watch the MMFF movies."
The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2019 organizing committee shared on Facebook as good result of first day gross was confirmed by its spokesperson Noel Ferrer.
"Despite the typhoon and the closing of some malls/cinemas in Visayas and Mindanao, our first day MMFF gross this year is comparable to last year’s successful opening," Ferrer said.

The first day of the festival is not yet over. But same with last year, the MMFF committe is expected not to divulge the exact and official figure of the first day gross.
NOTE: The producers, Executive Committe (ExeCom) and even the theater owners vowed according to rule NOT TO RELEASE the ranking, official earnings and box office gross to avoid the bandwagon effect.
"Thank you to the many moviegoers who trooped the theaters at Christmas Day to support the various film entries and carry out the yearly MMFF tradition," MMFF expressed gratitude.
Miracle In Cell No. 7 a surprise hit
The Philippine adaptation of hit Korean movie "Miracle in Cell No. 7" is a surprise hit on the first day of MMFF.
On Wednesday night, the film is the only MMFF 2019 entry on Twitter trending list as netizens shared their movie experience online and shown support to the film. Sources claim the film took the third spot in the box-office race.
Lead actor Aga Muhlach thanked his fans for watching his entry. He also posted a collage of photos of people queuing outside movie theaters.
Viva Films also posted a series of photos on its Instagram account, where they shared that the movie sold out in some cinemas. "People are lining up for this underdog film!"
"Miracle In Cell No. 7" through word of mouth, G classification by MTRCB and Grade A rating of Cinema Evaluation Board, is possible to rank second in the filmfest earnings.
Reports said that comedy film "The Mall, The Merrier" of Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis is leading among the eight official entries.
Sources added that Coco Martin's "3pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon" came in second place while Vic Sotto and Maine Mendoza's "Mission Unstapabol’: The Don Identity" was in the fourth spot.
Other official entries to this year's MMFF, aiming to win hearts of viewers are: Carmina Villarroel and Mylene Dizon's "Sunod"; Iza Calzado, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Meryll Soriano's "Culion"; Judy Ann Santos and Allen Dizon's "Mindanao" and Miles Ocampo and Rocco Nacino's "Write About Love."
The Gabi ng Parangal (Awards Night) of the 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival will be held on December 27, 2019 at the New Frontier Theater, Araneta City, Quezon City.
The festival will run until January 7, 2020.
