MANILA, Philippines – An 8-year-old kid from Laguna wins gold in an international math competition in Vietnam, bringing honor to the country.
Zac Harvey Gordula, a Grade 3 student and math wizard from Lopez Elementary School won two gold medals for scoring the highest at the individual and team categories of the 2019 Singa or the Singapore Math Global Team Competition held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from November 22 to 26.

In the Singateers round, Gordula secured the top spot to win the gold in the individual category for the Grade 3 level.
Then, Gordula would also win gold in the team category as he joins the team comprised of two other math wizards, one from Indonesia and another from host country Vietnam. The team secured the top spot, winning gold in the team round middle division of the global math challenge.
Aside from the two gold medals he won for the individual and team contests, Gordula also received a trophy for emerging as the overall runner-up among Grade 3 students who joined the competition.
The Singa event is an international team and individual-based math competition that “focuses on very strong teamwork and high-levels of collaboration, stamina and mutual support and superlative math skills,” explained the Singapore International Math Contest Centre (SIMCC). The organizers describe the event as a” unique new math competition with ambitious and important goals”.
Not his first international win
It turned out that this is not the first time that Gordula won in an international math competition. Aside from the recent double gold in Singa, the youngster also won gold in the math olympiad contest and two bronze medals in the math warriors and mind sports contests of the 5th Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge held in Singapore last July!
