MANILA, Philippines – Netizens were touched and also impressed with a young student's ingenuity in making use of a banana leaf as notebook.
Life has been hard for student Erlande Monte of Lianga National Comprehensive School. His mother has no work while his father only earns P4,000 as a road maintenance worker for the Department of Public Works and Highways. And while he may not have much, he showed that poverty is not an excuse to stop learning.
On Facebook, Teacher Arcilyn Azarcon shared how she witnessed her student Erlande's perseverance to learn. She said that after asking the rest of the class to copy the writings on the board, she was surprised to see Erlande writing on a banana leaf.
She recalled, "Ang sabi ko, hala bakit ano banana leaf ang sinusulatan mo and then when I look out may banana na nakaputol doon and then sabi ko pinutol mo ba yung dalawang banana? Hindi po ma'am kumuha lang ako ng dahon doon."
Despite their hardships, stopping school is not an option for Erlande because he dreams of becoming a soldier someday.
Erlande's story has touched many hearts online. There were many praises and words of encouragement for the student.
Netizen E. Combe wrote, "Hangang-hanga po ako sa estudyanteng katulad mo."
Another one wrote, "God bless young man. Just study harder and you'll be successful someday."
