MANILA, Philippines – Broadcast journalist Raffy Tulfo earned the ire of netizens after he pressured a teacher who was complained of humiliating a student to resign or face charges.
An episode of Tulfo’s radio show “Raffy Tulfo in Action" aired last Monday, showed the grandmother and parents of a Grade 2 student complaining to Tulfo about their child's teacher Melita Limjuco.
According to the grandmother, her grandson was humiliated after Teacher Melita sent him to sit outside the classroom the whole class period for failure to bring his report card. They said the incident has caused trauma to their child.
Tulfo asked the mother Rosemil Edroso, what consequence she wished the teacher should face. The mother replied, “Ayaw ko namang ipakulong siya. Magpahinga na lang siya. Mawalan siya ng lisensiya."
The broadcaster called the teacher involved over the phone and made her choose; to face charges in court or to have her license revoked.
Teacher Melita replied, “Iyon na lang pong desisyon ng father at mother."
The decision didn't sit too well with the netizens who aired their sentiments online. On Twitter,
"JusticeForTeachers and #Tulfo trended on Twitter Friday, November 22.
Many criticized Tulfo for passing such judgements when his show isn't the proper venue for such legal complaints. They said Teacher Melita was robbed of a proper legal proceeding and was judged in less in an hour.
Many lambasted Tulfo for being "one-sided" and unfair to the teacher who only wanted to discipline the child.
Teachers cried foul over the shaming Teacher Melita received and said they deserve so much respect than they actually get.
Teacher Melita's daughter defends her mother
Meanwhile, Kyla Limjuco, the daughter of Teacher Melita wrote a lengthy message defending her mother. She said her mother has admitted her fault and apologized but was still shamed and judged wrongly.
Raffy Tulfo backtracks
Due to backlash, Raffy Tulfo has backtracked on his earlier decision and admitted sending the teacher to jail was too much.

wow, taking off her professional license in just 10 mins? in which she works hard for years, sacrifice her money and time just to be remove in less an hour without a legal process. it shows that Mr. Tulfo's judgment is just to satisfied his viewers.#Tulfo #JusticeForTeachersPh— ᜇᜈᜒᜃ (@dieyenay) November 22, 2019
My God #Tulfo, pls filter the cases you’re trying to resolve. Oo nagkamali guro ang teacher but you’re not in the position to expose it in TV. You’re putting the tchr in shame. Not that I’m protecting my co-teacher but there are legal procedures to that case. Goodness. 🖕🏻— Ruffy Aznar Mapano, LPT 🏳️🌈 (@roofroofyy) November 21, 2019

I just hate the idea that teachers always get humiliated on their attempt to discipline students. If parents don’t want this to happen, then be their child’s teacher and have him or her homeschooled to experience the same. #TULFO— ❄️ (@itsmearvinv) November 21, 2019

I hope DepEd will file legal actions against #Tulfo this is not right. Teachers are better than that. Philippines we are better than this, let's do our thing. Respect your teacher.#JusticeForTeachersPh— 데니쓰 ♡ (@agustdeng_) November 22, 2019
