MANILA, Philippines – A woman who spent over 23 years selling donuts and other food items like empanada recently went viral for her inspiring story as she was able to send her kids to school – and her eldest is already a teacher!
Nanay Nancy joined Wowowin’s “Willie of Fortune” segment as “Nanay Donut”, joining other hawkers who sell in the streets by calling out to customers and shouting to advertise their goods.
When asked by host Willie Revillame why her nickname is “Donut”, Nanay Nancy admitted that people have come to know her by that name because she’s been selling donuts for 23 years. A lot of her regular customers simply call her as Donut; Nanay Nancy doesn’t mind because she enjoys the moniker, considering that she is supporting her family in this manner.
“Eh kasi po napatunayan na ng donut… Twenty three years na po akong nagdo-donut. Hindi po ako nakikilala sa tunay kong pangalan kung hindi dahil sa pagdo-donut,” she proudly announced.
In fact, Nanay Nancy was able to send her kids to school by selling donuts. Her eldest is already a teacher while her second child, also an education student, is also set to graduate this school year. While her third child already has a family, her youngest is in Grade 11.
According to Nanay Nancy, she has to work doubly hard for her family because her husband is sick.
Accompanied by her second child Mae who’s also going to be a teacher soon, Nanay Nancy proudly talked about her family and the sacrifices she did to send her children to school.
“Ma, thank you so much sa lahat ng sakripisyo mo. Hindi kita kinakahiya kahit inaasar nila kami na ‘yung nanay namin, nagtitinda lang. Hindi nila alam ‘yung hirap ng isang tindera. Iyong maglako ka maghapon kahit katirikan iyong araw. Ma, thank you…” Mae told her mother, bringing tears to everyone’s eyes.
