These days, weddings can be so grand that we often see couples having their reception at a popular resort hotel with elaborate décor, hundreds of guests, and a night of music and dancing. Others even have two or even three weddings – and one often involves a destination wedding.
Of course, that also translates to spending a lot of money, but many couples don’t mind the huge expense because you ideally get married just once in a lifetime. It is alright to splurge. Still, there are others who are more practical; they choose budget weddings to use their money to buy a house, instead.
But Nigerian couple Adewale Yussuf and Blessing Ijeoma recently went viral after announcing on their wedding invitation that they won’t be hosting any party after the ceremony. While they invited their family and friends to be with them at the ceremony, they told everyone that no reception will be held.
What’s a wedding without a reception? Well, it’s the most practical thing because the bride and groom wouldn’t be spending anything on food, party décor, or anything else that comes with the party! This is certainly the best wedding hack ever, if you want to go for a minimalist wedding.
Netizens praised the couple for being frugal, saying that wedding parties do tend to be expensive, yet you will only be spending that much money for one night.
“Well done guys. God bless your union. You don't go into debts because of wedding. I believe lesson is learnt,” one netizen wrote.
But others think the couple is just being too stingy. If they can’t afford a reception, then they shouldn’t invite their friends to the wedding. Others said that the reception is an important part of the wedding because this is the time for families from both sides to meet.
Yussuf later revealed that his friends actually threw a surprise wedding reception for him and Ijeoma!
“My wife and I had decided to not have a reception party after our wedding. Just church service, nothing big,” Yussuf shared on Instagram.
“But, on the day of the event after we had taken our pictures, I was tricked to the office by my mentors and to my surprise my team and friends had planned a surprise reception party for us.”
The couple’s choice of not having a party after the wedding divided the internet, but most netizens believe this is the best idea they have ever heard.
