Government workers to receive 10% salary increase under proposed 2020 budget

MANILA, Philippines – Acting Budget Secretary Wendel Avisado announced that government workers can expect to receive an increase of 10% in their monthly salary by next year.

Avisado made the announcement as a response to query raised by Bayan Muna Rep. Ferdinand Gaite.

Currently, the lowest-paid government employee is earning around P11,000 as basic monthly salary for Salary Grade 11. Avisado said, the employee can expect a wage increase of 10% from their monthly salary.

"That means this employee will get P1,100 pay increase,” Gaite clarified.

Earlier, Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab, who chairs the House of Representatives committee on appropriations, revealed that out of the proposed P4.1-trillion national budget for 2020, at least P31 billion was allocated for compensation adjustment.

Rep. Gaite criticized the budget saying it isn't enough to cover wage increase of more than one million government officials and employees. He further lamented how President Rodrigo Duterte allocated a much bigger budget for the increase of soldiers and uniformed men.

“For next year, the President proposed a far bigger P70 billion for the salary increase of soldiers and policemen, who are far fewer than civilian government personnel,” Gaite said.

Following the 10% proposed increase, the basic pay of public school teachers and government nurses entry-level at Salary Grade 11 would go up from P20,754 to P22,829.

The proposed increase in one month is almost the total amount of adjustment teachers and nurses have received over the last four years under the former President Noynoy Aquino's Salary Standardization Law.
