MANILA, Philippines – In what seems like a show of unity, the members of the House of Representatives of the 18th Congress raised their hands to pray over their new Speaker Taguig City Representative Alan Peter Cayetano.
The lawmakers were all seen standing to pray for Cayetano and were led in prayer by CIBAC party-list Representative Bro. Eddie Villanueva.
Pastor Bro. Eddie was also elected as Deputy Speaker at that time.
An excerpt of Rep. Bro. Eddie's prayer stated, "You willed that we are here today at the 1st day of the 18th Congress, to make a difference for the Philippines and for the Filipinos as lawmakers... Help us, so that history would be kind to us as the future generation remembers this season in our country."
"God bless the House of Representatives of the 18th Congress," he added.
Photos of the lawmakers "united" in prayer quickly went viral online. A netizen named Anthony Minguez shared how impressed he was with the scene.
He wrote, "What a scene to behold in congress. Prayer even before the first session will start. Lord we continue to pray for the new leaders of our nation."
He quoted bible verse 2 2 Timothy 2:1-2 which stated, "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."
Minguez' post was flooded with reactions from netizens. Many were hopeful and positive that change will soon come. There were also others who mocked the scene as merely an "act."
Netizen A. Villareal commented, "May the glory of the Lord shine in the Philippines. This is a great example of the leaders of the country trusting the Lord as they serve. The Lord bless you all!"
Netizen J. Benavides also wrote, "Glory to God, a praying nation will lead to God's abundant blessing."
Netizen J. Algabre went a bit harsh and wrote, "Nagpapatawa. Ang disenteng professional na legal na magnanakaw ng pera ng gobyerno may nalamang prayer. Hahaha. Thanks. Nahiya si God sa inyo."
