MANILA, Philippines – A member of It's Showtime's girl group “GirlTrends” will fly as the new ‘Darna’! This was announced by Star Cinema managing director Olivia M. Lamasan in an interview with ABS-CBN News on Wednesday.
For many years, there had been a lot of speculations and rumors about who would become the new ‘Darna’, the iconic Pinay superhero who’s the equivalent of Wonder Woman in local lore. But Star Magic talent Jane de Leon was chosen by Lamasan and the management out of the hundreds of young women who auditioned for the role.
“Natuwa nga ako na isa siya sa mga nag-audition. Sabi ko ay there's something about her. Pati si Direk Lauren (Dyogi) said there's something about her. Bilang filmmakers, may nakikita kami. Malakas ang instinct ng bata,” Lamasan said.

Darna director Jerrold Tarog admitted that Jane had been presented to them some years ago.
“Pinresent na si Jane sa amin a couple of years ago, and among all the 13 noon na Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) presented from Star Magic, natatandaan ng isang talent handler na 'Inang. napansin mo na siya noon, itong batang ito pwedeng sumali ng beauty pageants. And then I saw her again in 'Halik.' Sabi ko, 'itong batang to, meron.' There's something about her,” Tarog shared.
What’s new for Darna?
As expected, netizens are wondering whether Jane’s Darna would just be a remake of the old tale.
“Yung Darna story natin ngayon is a genesis story, a coming of age. Ang requirement talaga is somebody na young and with an air of innocence but at the same time a strength of character,” Lamasan said. She added that Jane is perfect for the role.
“I will do everything and anything for the role because I believe in her, I believe in what Darna stands for,” Jane said in response.
Other Darna actresses
Star Cinema had long planned for a new Darna flick but had been met with various problems with their chosen stars.
The first actress tapped to play the role was Angel Locsin who actually played an excellent Darna in the TV series back in 2005. But she had to unexpectedly leave the project due to a damage on her spine due to a disc bulge she developed from the many rigid training regimen she underwent for various roles.
Later on, Liza Soberano was picked for the role but she also had to quit after injuring her finger.
Netizens are hoping that Jane’s Darna would finally be able to fly this time around…
