MANILA, Philippines – Former First Lady and Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda R. Marcos on Monday celebrated her 90th birthday at the Rizal Park Open Air Auditorium in Luneta.
Mrs. Marcos was surrounded by her family and loyalists in a thanksgiving party on the eve of her birthday.
At the center of the festivities, Mrs. Marcos was surprised to see several fancy cakes to honor her. There was a cake that features an 'Imelda Marcos" topper in her signature pink terno. There were also several more cakes that feature some of the infrastructures built during her late husband former President Ferdinand Marcos regime.
Among the highlighted infrastructures was the Quiapo Golden Mosque, which began construction in 1976, under the supervision of former First Lady. It was built for the visit of Libya's President Muammar al-Gaddafi, although his visit was cancelled.
Another cake featured the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), which was founded in 1969 as a premiere showcase of the arts in the Philippines.
The rest of the other cakes highlighted the medical centers built during the Marcos regime, the Lung Center of the Philippines, National Kidney and Transplant Institute and the Phillippine Heart Center.
Friends of Imelda Romualdez Marcos (FIRM) hosted the party, which gathered at least 2,000 Marcos loyalists.
FIRM President Artemio Lachica said it was inspiration for them to see Mrs. Marcos strong and healthy. He said, "We are very happy that Madame is pleased by what we have prepared for her today. Seeing her healthy and strong is an inspiration to us all."
"We wish her the best of health and hope that she’ll be given more years to be with us. Our support for her and the Marcos family remains solid. They can always rely on us," he added.
Since the party coincided with the third anniversary of the election protest filed by her son, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr., against Vice President Leni Robredo, the Marcos matriarch said her wish would be that the protest be resolved soon.
"Three years have passed since my son filed his election protest for the post of Vice President post. I hope the Supreme Court can resolve this soon. That will be my best birthday gift ever,” Madame Marcos said.
