MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines Mindanao announced its first-ever summa cum laude since it was established in 1995.
Pete Maverick Nicole Estudillo earned an average grade of 1.1971, the highest grade the university has ever recorded.
The Food Technology major was hailed the university's summa cum laude and will march along 352 candidates for graduation, 93 with honors, 13 magna cum laude and 80 cum laude on Friday, June 21.
The 22-year-old shared that her achievement was made not only for herself but for the university as well.
Estudillo said, "Summa is just a bonus and summa is really not for me. It’s for UPMin."
“When the honor was given to me, I felt happy for UPMin. That the hope that has long been in the hearts of the alumni and the profs, that we’ll have a summa, has finally come and I was happy that I get to be the answer to their prayers,” she added
Estudillo admitted she didn't think of "uno" when she first entered UP. She was already contented with passing the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT).
The achiever also shared how her love for science has made her think more about our contribution to the society.
"So I learned that the small things make a big impact and the small decisions you make, make a big impact on other people. So I learned [that] don’t shy away if you think that you’re doing just a small task because that task may be vital. So be good at what you’re assigned to. Be good at what you’re doing. Slay it," Estudillo said.
Estudillo's thesis entitled, "Antioxidant and Anticancer Potential of Artocarpus Fruit Wastes", will soon be presented to the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in July. It focuses on how fruit wastes can be converted into healthy foods.
Aside from excelling in academics, Estudillo is also active in several civic organizations. She is an active member and officer of groups such as Rotaract Club of UPMin, UPMin Koro Kantahanay, PSALM Ministry of UPMin, For the Unity and Solidarity of Every Student in UP (FUSE UP) and Let’s Do It Philippines Youth – Davao.
