MANILA, Philippines – Many are in grieving with the death of the movie icon, Eddie Garcia. Along with his passing, is the resurfacing of many life lessons he has imparted to many close to him.
An old interview of the veteran icon has recently gone viral after it shows how Garcia faced challenges and difficulties in his journey in life. Among those lessons he shared is on how he coped facing the tragic deaths of those very dear to him.
The loss of a child seems unbearable to a parent. But Garcia faced losing two children as well as the passing of his beloved wife.
In the interview, Garcia revealed how difficult it was to bury your own child. He lost his eldest child, a son who was slowly following his footsteps in the movie industry, in a motorcycle accident. He was only 22 years old during his death in 1971.
The actor later on became a widower in 1995 when his wife died due to cancer.
If that wasn’t enough, Garcia’s youngest child, a daughter also died due to a heart attack. She was 39 years old.
Looking back, Garcia said he welcomed and accepted that death will come to all of us.
Garcia said, “Well, that is inevitable. So, you have to live it.”
“Well, life must go on,” he half-heartedly smiled.
While talking about death, Garcia said he too isn’t scared of passing away.
“Well, like they say... when you gotta go, you better go. Yeah, like me, I don’t know, one of these days, I might kick the bucket,” he said.
The movie icon, who was 85 years old when the interview was made, said he already gave instructions and arrangements for his funeral.
He said, “I already paid for my cremation. Binayaran ko na. My helicopter pilot-friend will pick up the ashes from the crematory and spread sa Manila Bay.”
When asked why he wanted his ashes scattered on Manila Bay, the ever-funny actor laughed and joked, “Para pag namasyal ka sa Roxas Boulevard, ‘Baka multuhin tayo ni Eddie rito!’ Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!”
“And I want to spread on a beautiful sunset,” he said, smiling.
Garcia passed away on June 20, 2019 after falling in a coma for 12 days. He was 90 years old. His funeral request was followed by his partner, Lilibeth Romero.
