MANILA, Philippines – A newcomer in the political scene, Victor Ma Regis “Vico” Sotto surprised everyone after winning the mayoralty race in Pasig City, toppling the 27-year reign of the Eusebio family.
As of 9:46 am on May 14, with 97.49% of election returns transmitted and representing 467 of 479 clusters in the city, Sotto has 204,188 votes versus the 118,281 votes received by Robert “Bobby” Eusebio.

A neophyte in the political arena, Sotto had only served as councilor for one term before deciding to try his luck for the highest position in the city. Winning the election by a wide 85,000-margin, Sotto becomes the first-ever mayor in 27 years that doesn’t hold the surname ‘Eusebio’.
The son of showbiz icons Vic Sotto and Coney Reyes, the 29-year-old Sotto was accompanied by his parents when he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC). Many couldn’t help but point out that Sotto was just 2 years old when the Eusebios began their political rule in Pasig City.
Going against the ruling Eusebios was certainly a major challenge for the millennial candidate, but he promises voters that he could bring change. During the campaign period, he promised to fight against corruption, end favoritism and fear, make government information and services easier to access for everyone, and to deliver better healthcare services to all residents of the city.
“Let’s treat Pasigueños not just as beneficiaries, but as partners. If we treat our citizens as partners in governance, the services that we give to them will be more responsive, and will become better,” boldly declared.
Confident of his win, Eusebio filed certificate for candidacy (COC) for reelection and announced that he welcomes the neophyte’s challenge.
Aside from having famous parents, he is also the great-grandson of the late Senator Vicente Sotto, nephew of Sen. Vicente “Tito” Castelo Sotto III, and cousin of Quezon City vice mayoral candidate Gian Sotto who also won the seat.
