A couple of years ago, one kid went viral for studying outside a McDonald’s outlet, making use of light from the store to make his assignments. Recently, this kid graduated from elementary – and the store decided to throw him a free graduation party!
The determined young student was identified as Daniel Cabrera, a student at Subangdaku Elementary School in Subangdaku, Mandaue in Cebu, central Philippines. Because the family does not have electricity at home, Daniel takes advantage of light at the McDonald’s outlet so he could work on his assignments.
One day, he was diligently working on his assignments when someone snapped a photo and shared it on Facebook. It became an overnight viral hit, with many netizens admiring this kid for doing his best to study his lessons at that McDonald’s outlet even if the light wasn’t even as bright as those in the homes of other students.
A lot of netizens said that this kid will have a bright future ahead, calling him ‘madiskarte sa buhay’. Many also admired him for not complaining about his life, choosing instead to find a way to solve his problems.
After the post went viral, Daniel and his family received a lot of help from private individuals, charity institutions, religious organizations, and even from the McDonald’s outlet where he was photographed.
McDonald’s North Reclamation Area branch gave him a monthly allowance of Php1,500 – and it’s something he is set to receive until he graduates from high school!
Recently, Daniel graduated from Subangdaku Elementary School and received two awards. Netizens were impressed to learn that the kid who studies under the light of the lamp outside McDonald’s was able to garner the awards “Best in Math” and “Best in Attendance”.
The store staff also admired the boy – and threw him a free graduation party after learning of his recent achievements.
Netizens could not help but feel happy for the boy, saying it was great for McDonald’s to throw him a congratulatory party. After all, they are not obliged to help the kid and even throw him a party, yet they went out of their way to show this kid that his diligence was quite admirable.
Kudos McDonald’s and congratulations Daniel!
