'Close fight': San Isidro, Leyte mayor wins by 1 vote difference

An incumbent mayor of Leyte lost her re-election bid by only one vote.

In what seems to be the “closest fight” in Election 2019, Remedios “Wingbebot” Veloso of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) bagged the Mayoralty seat by defeating incumbent San Isidro, Leyte Mayor Susan Ang with only one vote difference.

Veloso admitted he thought he was really going to lose the race. But with one lucky vote, Veloso was proclaimed the new municipal mayor.

Veloso earned 8,829 votes while Ang had 8,828 votes.

Ang was running for her second term as mayor. She ran under administration's PDP-LABAN party.

On May 8, Ang survived an attack when a gunman strafed her house. Municipal administrator Levi Mabini, who just arrived at the house on board his motorcycle was shot dead.

Ang pointed at Veloso for the shooting incident but he vehemently denied any involvement.

Veloso, on the other hand, is the nephew of Leyte 3rd District Rep. Vicente Veloso. Representative Veloso had earlier made noise after his name was included in the Presidential “narco-list.” He vowed to step down if proven guilty.
