MANILA, Philippines – Filipino showbiz fans woke up to sad news of comedian Chokoleit’s passing on Saturday night, March 9.
The comedian, whose real name is Jonathan Aguilar Garcia, was among the performers at the Variety Show for the Abrenian Kawayan Festival 2019 held at Abra Sports Complex, Bangued, Abra that night.
The video of Chokoleit’s performance would soon go viral after it showed the comedian struggling throughout the show, breathing hard and often drinking water, yet he continued with his act despite the difficulties he must have been going through at the time.
For sure, Chokoleit knew he was not feeling well as he struggled to breathe yet he remained a professional performer and going through the act to make his audience happy.
Known for his self-deprecating jokes, Chokoleit made fun of himself and his face throughout the show. Though some believe he had a premonition of what would happen that evening as he joked about his being first to perform among the other artists scheduled to appear that night, including Coleen Garcia, Enchong Dee, Paulo Avelino, JM de Guzman, Ryza Cenon, and Pops Fernandez.
“Akala niyo! Mali ang hula niyo, ‘no?! Ang ganda ng... introduction—isa sa may pinakamagandang mukha. Akala, nagkamali kayong lahat,” the comedian joked.
“Siyempre, ako ang mauuna! Kasi kung ako huli, baka hindi ko na kayo abutan! So, ako nga pala si Chokoleit…”
But after his passing, many thought these words were rather chilling.
“Chokoleit’s last words are chilling. Still can’t believe how life just passes by. Hope this helps us appreciate life and our loved ones. RIP,” fellow performer Carl Guevarra of ‘The Juans’ wroted as he posted a short clip from Chokoleit’s performance.

The full video of Chokoleit’s last performance in Abra would go viral after his passing. Many could not help but cry as they watched the comedian doing his best to make his audience laugh despite obviously having a difficult time breathing.
A lot of netizens called out those responsible for the show for not calling for a break during Chokoleit’s performance as he was obviously struggling to breathe. He might have survived if he didn’t complete the show, yet others said the team probably didn’t think it was something serious.
Too bad no one realized just how badly Chokoleit had needed to be taken to the hospital at that moment, but others said there really was no one to blame because the comedian could have stopped the performance himself if he really felt that something was wrong.
After the show, Chokoleit was rushed to Abra Provincial Hospital but he succumbed to pulmonary edema and heart attack, confirmed attending physician Dr. Rosauro Seares.
For his impressive performance despite what the difficulties he was experiencing, the comedian earned praise across social media.
“Hats off to your great performance, friendship and love extended to the whole people of Abra. Again, we extend our prayers, thanks and love to our dear friend Chokoleit,” Abra Governor Joy Bernos said in a statement.
Rest in peace, Chokoleit! Thanks for the laughter you brought to our lives…
