He went to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a lowly technician, but now that he has found success in his job and working as engineer for the company, Engr. Jethroefel “Jet” Ramboyong used his position and experience to help other Filipinos find jobs in this Middle East country.
Back in 1998 when he first arrived in the UAE, Ramboyong worked as technician and was doing all the groundwork on the field for Etisalat, a multinational Emirati based telecommunications services provider.
“I came to the UAE on September 12, 1998. I was the youngest among the more than 300 technicians and engineers hired during a mass recruitment in Manila for Etisalat that year,” Ramboyong recalled.
He shared that in those days, the Filipino community in the UAE was still small.
“Filipinos then knew each other at least by face. Whenever there was an event, you would see Filipinos from far-flung areas coming to Abu Dhabi to interact with each other,” he said. “Now it's different, the community has grown and Filipinos are everywhere across the UAE.”
Just as the Filipino community grew in the UAE, so did Ramboyong’s skills and knowledge. He worked his way from the ground up, eventually becoming a full-fledged engineer for Etisalat.
Realizing he could actually help the growing community of Filipinos in the UAE, he founded an organization that was first called as Filipino Electronics and Communications Engineers Association (FECEA) in 2008, some 10 years after he first arrived in the UAE.
FECEA would become the UAE chapter of the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP), an association for ECE graduates in the Philippines.
Through the organization, Ramboyong has helped a lot of other Filipinos find jobs in the UAE.
“We have extended support to those looking for jobs. We also help them upgrade their professional competency levels through conducting seminars and trainings, and support them in applying for professional ECE certifications, Asean Engineering Registry, among others,” Ramboyong revealed.
For his efforts, Ramboyong is looked up to by the Filipino community in the Middle East.
He was awarded as the 2018 Outstanding Professional of the Year in the field of Electronics Engineering from the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in Manila.
He also received the 2018 Bagong Bayani Award, an award given to outstanding overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
