Miss Universe 1993 Dayanara Torres reveals battling cancer

On Facebook, the Puerto Rican beauty queen announced the sad news she is facing. Dayanara spoke to her followers and fans via a video that she is battling “Melanoma” or skin cancer.

Melanoma, also known as malignant melanoma, is a type of cancer that develops from the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. Its symptom is usually a mole that is increasing in size, has irregular edges, change in color, itchiness, or skin breakdown. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Dayanara shared that she had a mole that she had ignored for a long time, only to learn that it was cancerous.

She said, “Today I have some sad news... I have been diagnosed with skin cancer "melanoma" from a big spot/mole I never paid attention to, even though it was new, it had been growing for years and had an uneven surface.”

Dayanara continued that it was her fiancé who convinced her to get it tested. She shared, “My fiancé Louis had been begging me to have it checked and finally made an appointment himself... after a biopsy and a second surgery last Tuesday the results unfortunately are positive.”

The beauty queen turned actress also admitted that she already underwent surgery. Dayanara said, “Now we are waiting to see which treatment I will be receiving but they have already removed a big area from the back of my knee and also they have removed 2 lymph nodes at the top of my leg where it had already spread. Hoping it has not spread to any more areas or organs.”

Dayanara said that while she has fears, she holds on to her faith and her children for strength. She said, “I have put everything in God's hands and I know he has all control... My sons although a bit scared know about my faith and know they have a warrior of a mommy!”

She continued to ask for prayers from her supporters. Dayanara also reminded everyone that “if you see something or feel something different in your body, have it checked.”

The beauty queen is well loved in the Philippines. Back in 1995, Dayanara starred with Aga Muhlach in the movie, “Basta't Kasama Kita” which won the hearts of many Pinoys. In 2016 when she visited the country, Dayanara had a homecoming in ASAP where she was one of the original hosts.
