MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray finally admitted that she and her longtime boyfriend Clint Bondad have broken up.
Rumors have been circulating online that the couple had ended their relationship since December. Reports heightened when Clint had “awkward” answers about Catriona during his guesting on Eat Bulaga last week.
Since our Miss Universe is finally back in the country, Catriona addressed the issue. She confirmed that she and Clint have called it quits. They were together for more than 6 years.
During an interview with Boy Abunda, Catriona said that things already became rocky just before she competed for Miss Universe.
Despite the public seeing Clint supporting Catriona during the pageant, the beauty queen revealed that they were already having relationship problems.“We weren't on speaking terms,” Catriona admitted.
"It was really tough going through the competition with that happening at the same time but I had to keep reminding myself that this was a once in the lifetime opportunity. I need to give my best of why am I here, that I want to represent the Philippines well," the Miss Universe added.
The reason behind the break up was they “outgrew each other.” Catriona had been with Clint since she was 18 years old.
The Fil-Aussie beauty added, “When you're together for so long and you start off from a very young age, you grow. Whether that be in your personal or in your career --sometimes you just outgrow each other."
Catriona said, "If we're meant to be together, maybe it'd happen in the future but as of right now..(shaking her head for “no”.)
Catriona added that she only hopes for the best for Clint. She said, “So it was a struggle but you know, I see that he's doing so well now and I don't want to talk about it that much cause one, I'm private and two, I greatly respect him and I'm grateful for the time that I had with him. I just wish him the best.”
Asked if the beauty queen still loves her former beau, Catriona refused to give a definite answer.
She replied instead, "I've never really had the chance because being in a 6-year relationship from the age of 18, I've never been a young adult, especially a young growing Christian also in that season of singleness.”
“And I think it's really important as an individual because you need to know what you want, who you are to be establishing your identity as your own person. And I just want to take that time. I mean being a Miss Universe for a year is amazing experience and I just want to be able to grow in that kind of season as Miss Universe,” Catriona continued.
Clint Bondad replies
Meanwhile, Clint Bondad had also broken up his silence on the issue and posted a heartwarming message on Instagram.
Clint posted a previous interview of him saying that Catriona “first of all, belongs to herself.” He went on to wish her all the best.
The model-actor said, “Man, and here I am working so hard on my ‘bad boy’ image… I stand by all I have ever said about you. You are still the most beautiful woman that I have ever met. I wish you the very best on your path, wherever it will carry you… Truly.”
“This is certainly not what we both wanted, but most certainly what we both need at this point in our lives.”
And quoted James Blunt’s song “You’re beautiful”, Clint wrote, “But we shared a moment that will last ‘til the end.”
