MANILA, Philippines – A student from Davao City got creative so he can earn money and still able to focus and attend his classes.
Joenel Malanog, a student from the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) in Davao City, Davao del Sur has opened his “honesty store” inside school campus.
The 20-year-old student used to go around the campus selling his food but difficulty started when his class schedule became hectic.
As a first year entrepreneurship student, Malanog knows the importance of never taking an opportunity for granted. Instead of missing a few sales when he has to attend classes, Malanog decided to trust people's honesty.
While he goes to class, Malanog leaves his items unattended and relies on the goodness of people to leave the right amount of payment and change on a basket.
What's more impressive is that Malanog's earning isn't just used for his personal needs but also to help fund the education of his 4 siblings. The resourceful student is determined to finish her degree and said that he is trying his best to be “madiskarte.”

Malanog sells lumpia, donut, ice candy and pork barbecue. On his “honesty store”, he wrote down the price of his food items and to motivate others to be honest, he also wrote, “God knows. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death.”
Malanog also explained, “Wala ko kay naa ko'y klase. Salamat.” [I'm not around because I have classes. Thanks.]
Shirley Villanueva, Vice President for Academic Affairs of USEP is indeed proud of their student. She said that the Malanog's act has made them realize that there are still a slot of honest students.
