MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) announced today its accreditation as a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provider for professional teachers.
"The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Council for Professional Teachers granted accreditation to the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) to conduct CPD programs for professional teachers with Accreditation No. 2018-242 valid until December 09, 2021," PHIVOLCS in a statement.
The CPD Act of 2016 aims to promote and upgrade the practice of professions in the country and to improve the competence of professionals by earning CPD credit units. The CPD credit units are achieved from formal, informal, or nonformal learning setting.
DOST-PHIVOLCS provides trainings for public school teachers about awareness and preparedness for earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes since 2002.
The 3-day Training on Communicating Volcano, Earthquake and Tsunami Hazards for High School Teachers focuses on basic information about volcano, earthquake and tsunami, and its hazards, with emphasis on how to communicate these topics to students. It also tackles preparedness and mitigation.
The program content is tailor-fitted to the needs of the target area. The 1-day Teachers’ Training on Communicating Earthquake and Tsunami mainly focuses on fundamental information on earthquake, tsunami, and its hazards, preparedness, and mitigation, and how to effectively utilize PHIVOLCS information materials.
The trainings provide information that will help teachers facilitate learning about the science behind disasters of their students.
