A college student who broke up with his girlfriend last August 30 began saving the money he usually spends on their dates. In 4 months, he was able to save more than Php16,000!
His inspiring savings journey went viral on Facebook after it was shared by financial literacy page, PESO SENSE.
The young man chose to remain anonymous but revealed that he’s a 4th year college student who lives in the province. When he broke up with his girlfriend last August 30, he was so broken-hearted that he didn’t feel like getting out of the house and having fun.
So, on September 1, he thought it would be a good idea to just save the money he usually spends on dates. Inspired by posts on PESO SENSE about saving, he began saving his money inside an empty Stik-O container.

He decided to save paper bills so that the container won’t be filled up quickly.
The young man shared that he earns extra money by letting friends and neighbors loan a 25-kg sack of rice at a small fee of Php150 per month. If 10 people get rice from him, he earns Php1,500 a month. Obviously, he earns more when more people take the loan.
Aside from this, he would also sell gasoline outside their home. He would add Php10 on his capital. Since he usually sells around 24 liters a week, he gets to earn around Php240 per week. Each month, he sometimes earns Php1,000.
All the money he earns from these side jobs and businesses used to go to expenses for his girlfriend but he decided that now he’s single, he’s just saving everything he earns.
When the young man finally opened the container over the New Year’s festivities, he was quite happy to see that he was able to save Php16,400!
Netizens were happy for the young man, saying it was a good thing he saved this much; though others are joking that he had a ‘high-maintenance’ girlfriend and it was a good thing he got rid of her.
