MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang Palace on Monday, December 17, announced the suspension of work in government offices nationwide on January 2, 2019 (Wednesday).
Memorandum Circular No. 54, signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, stated that suspension would give government employees "full opportunity to celebrate the holiday with their families and loved ones."

New Year's Day which falls on a Tuesday, is already a regular holiday.

UPDATE: On December 19, the Department of Education (DepEd) issued Memorandum No. 193, s. 2018 for the suspension of classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in public schools, and work in all offices and units of the Department of Education nationwide on January 2. This is in accordance with Memorandum Circular No. 54.
"Suspension of classes in private schools is left to the discretion of their respective school administrators," DepEd added.

New Year's Day which falls on a Tuesday, is already a regular holiday.
“Work in government offices throughout the country, including government-owned or -controlled corporations, government financial institutions, state universities and colleges, local government units, and other agencies and instrumentalities, is here by suspended on 2 January 2019.”
The memorandum added "those agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disaster s and calamities, and/or performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services."
"The suspension of work on the same date in other branches of government and in independent commissions or bodies, as well as in private companies and offices, is left to the sound discretion of their respective heads/management," the Palace added.
