MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe Spain Angela Ponce received a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd during the Miss Universe 2018.
Spain's beauty queen might have failed to enter the semi-finals of Miss Universe but she did make a mark in history. After a much talked about decision, Ponce became the first transgender to compete in Miss Universe.
During the coronation night, Miss Universe paid a tribute to Ponce by letting her walk down the runway as she removed her pageant sash. A video was being shown about her journey as a transgender breaking barriers and joining the biggest beauty pageant in the world.
Ponce said, “Simply for us all to understand that we are human and that we must make all our lives easier together. That reality for many people is going to change.”
As the crowd goes wild with cheers and applause, the beauty queen said, “If I can give that to the world I don't need to win Miss Universe, I only need to be here.”
Prior to the coronation night, Ponce shared her motivation to aim for the Miss Universe crown. She said, “I'm competing because it's what I've wanted to do since I was a little girl. I'm showing that trans women can be whatever they want to be: a teacher, a mother, a doctor, a politician and even Miss Universe."
When the night ended, Miss Universe Philippines Catriona Gray was crowned by last year's Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters as the new Miss Universe.
