MANILA, Philippines – Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo remarked that Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s stand of marijuana use could have been influenced by President Rodrigo Duterte.
As the whole country celebrates Catriona Gray’s win in Miss Universe, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo commented how the Filipina beauty queen had the same view on marijuana use as the president.
During the top 5 Question and Answer segment, host Steve Harvey asked Miss Philippines’ stand on the controversial legalization of marijuana use. He asked, “Canada recently joined Uruguay as the second nation in the world to make marijuana legal. What is your opinion on the legalization of marijuana?”
Without blinking an eye, Catriona expressed her view saying, “I'm for being used in medical use but not so for recreational use. Because I think if people were to argue, 'what about alcohol and cigarettes?' So everything is good but in moderation. Thank you.”
Panelo commented on Catriona’s answer saying, “Her position is an adoption of the Palace’s stand. Other than the people’s, there can be no greater voice than the President. The single biggest influencing voice is the President.”
The Palace spokesman admitted that Catriona might have researched or learned more about the issue on her research or the President’s statements might have influenced her. Panelo added, “It is the President that influenced her position or it may be the result of her own study after listening to various arguments pro and con.”
Meanwhile, PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde also scored in on the Catriona’s answer. When asked for his stand on the possible legalization of marijuana for medical use in the country, Albayalde said, “I think unang-una we have to consult with experts kung kailangan talaga, particularly with the Department of Health.”
