Though we already live in the modern days, the Philippines remains as a conservative country where the women are still expected to behave like Maria Clara, waiting for the guy to do the first move.
But things have changed. A lot of women feel more empowered these days – and many don’t even feel the need to have a man in their lives to enjoy life! And many have great careers that give them not just high salaries but also power and fame.
Yet people bash things that are not a common occurrence to them – such as the expensive monthsary gift that one young woman had given to her boyfriend.
Dominic Jose Largo shared photos of his girlfriend’s monthsary and Christmas gift: a pair of Nike Concords! He called his girlfriend Justine Faith Angeles a ‘keeper’ in his post, announcing that her gift is a dream come true for any baller.
In the photos, the lovely young woman could be seen smiling as she hands him the surprise gift. Dominic was especially excited because he had tried to buy the pair himself but was not able to get a reservation from Nike; the shoe was that popular!
Dominic ends his post with a post script about how he noticed there are a lot women who do this, with many of their customers at Toby’s (a sports and fitness shop) seeking the store associates’ help in pulling off a surprise.
“Eto na ba ang trending? Babae na nag susurprise,” the happy guy asked.
But while many were happy with the post, saying he really is one lucky guy, it received many negative comments from people who could not believe he was happy with the monthsary gift! A lot of people believe that he should be the one giving his girlfriend a surprise gift, not the other way around!
But, hey! How did they know he doesn’t give surprises to his girlfriend, anyway? Just because this was not announced in the post, it doesn’t mean he did not give her anything. And what’s wrong with a successful girl giving her man a gift when she could afford to do it, huh?
The Summit Express reached out to the couple for clarification on the issue. It turned out we were right all along.
Although Dominic was the lucky one in this monthsary for receiving such an expensive ‘dream-come-true’ gift, his girlfriend explained that he had always been the one who would surprise her in the past!
And though people slammed the girlfriend for giving the guy such an expensive gift for ‘just’ a monthsary, they are actually in a 4-year relationship! The gift was actually for their 56th monthsary, guys! You can all relax now; this isn’t going to be a short-lived fling like many people thought because they have been together that long already!
“In the recent years he's the one who always surprises me. In every special occasion he always make sure that he gives me something. It was just my first time to give him an expensive gift,” Justine told The Summit Express.
She explained that Dominic is an NBA fanatic and a basketball player himself. She first wanted to give him the LebronXVI as he idolizes Lebron but when that was also out of stock and she learned that the Jordan11 was available, Dominic thought this would also be a good option.
Both of them actually made the reservation at the Nike page but both had no luck there for either shoe. Later, she learned about another online shop that offered the Jordan one and immediately placed the order. Because she just couldn’t keep a secret from him, she showed him the checkout status.
Still, she wanted to surprise him, somehow; thus, she decided not to tell him once the shoes arrives, waiting instead for their monthsary to give him the gift.
“I was able to hide it and lie about it for a week. It was the most challenging part, since again, I can't secure a surprise. But it was more than a success, I'm glad I was able to give it to him that way,” Justine shared.
In a lengthy Facebook post, she also defended her actions after Dominic’s post went viral and he received so many negative comments about the gift.
“…Because we're living in a 21st century world, where feminism and equality is very much welcome. We should stop those cultures that women are the only ones who deserve to receive a gift in a relationship.
In a relationship there will always be two people. Those two people fight hand in hand so that they can stay in a relationship, so why should only women have to be rewarded? Why should only women be given the opportunity to be pampered or spoiled? Why should only women be given gifts or surprises? How about the efforts of men keeping up and fighting for the relationship? Don't they deserve to be rewarded as well?”
She also explained about the ‘keeper’ part of Dominic’s post.
“Everyone's right, being a keeper is not measured by the gifts that you can give, being a keeper is weighted through the willingness and eagerness to make your man the happiest once in a while. And it's not only restricted for material things. You know your man, you'll be able to know what will make him the happiest.
So, don't think that your efforts are being wasted just because you didn't spend thousands for it. The right man will appreciate everything that you'll give as long as your sincere on giving it, and doesn't want anything in return. I know this because for 4years being with this man, he's appreciated even the tiniest effort that I gave.”
And just in case you were wondering if her boyfriend did give her a gift for this particular monthsary, well he actually did! And it was also an expensive, fancy piece!
Who says ako lang may pasabog na gift? Ayaw din patalo eh.

The two have decided to not let netizens’ negative comments affect their relationship. After all, what’s really important in their relationship is that they both love each other – and they both love to give each other gifts! Isn’t that sweet?
