MANILA, Philippines – Filipina mountaineer Carina Dayondon recently made history for being the first Filipina to climb the so-called ‘Seven Summits’. She is the second Filipino to achieve such a feat, with the first one being Romi Garduce.
The ‘Seven Summits’ are the highest mountains in each of the seven continents. Although the actual list of mountains in the Seven Summits depend on who made the list and factors such as borders and islands included in the continents, mountaineers set their goals on a standard list.
For Dayondon, this meant sticking to the ‘Bass List’.
The list was created by Richard Bass who was the first to complete the mountaineering challenge. This has led to many mountaineers following in his footsteps or making variations of their own.
The Pinay mountaineer began her journey to climb the ‘Seven Summits’ after reaching the summit of Mt. Denali (6,190 m) in North America in 2006.
A year later, she joined the “Kaya ng Pinoy” Expedition to Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in Asia as well as the entire world. They successfully reached the summit of Mt. Everest and Dayondon would become one of the first three Filipinas to achieve this feat. Amazingly, they traversed the mountain, something that is considered to be an extremely challenging feat among mountaineers.
After a few years of hiatus, Dayondon summited Mt. Elbrus (5,642 m) in Europe in 2013. The following year, she completed Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m) in Australia. Then, the year after that, she reached Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) in Africa.
This year, 2018, Dayondon achieved her best one ever – reaching the summit of two mountains in the ‘Seven Summits’ list in the same year! First, she conquered Mt. Aconcagua (6,962 m) in South America before making it to Vinson Massif (4,892 m) in Antarctica.
SUMMARY: Carina Dayondon’s trip to the Seven (7) Summits
“I’m doing this to show the country that even a simple girl like me can reach her dreams,” she told Pinoy Mountaineer.
“Kung nakaya ko, kaya nyo rin!”
What an amazing feat! Congratulations!
