MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos have a lot of superstitious beliefs, especially those living in remote areas and the hinterlands. Many still believe that aswangs and manananggals are for real, making people stay inside their homes at night to avoid getting bitten by these shape-shifting evil creatures.
But there are also some places where people believe that women should stay away from water bodies during their ‘red days’ because they could get pregnant by the water creatures!
On the island of Manait in Bacacay, Albay, a 17-year-old girl named Kimberly Robles became the talk of the town after she supposedly got pregnant by a fish!
It was in June 2017 when Kimberly first noticed that she had a stomachache. After that, her stomach began to grow as if she was pregnant. A year later, the stomach had ballooned so much that she appeared to be 7-month pregnant. She had also gained 10 kg.
With her stomach growing steadily, her father, Pablo Besinal, accused her of hiding a secret lover and being pregnant but the young lady promised him this was not the case. Her grandmother got angry, reminding her that she had always warned the young lady against going to the sea when she has menstruation but the ‘hard-headed’ girl didn’t listen.
They finally took her to a doctor who performed an ultrasound and seemingly confirmed the ‘fish pregnancy’!
The ultrasound showed what appears to be a fish inside Kimberly’s tummy! It had the shape of a fish, with a fish head, fish mouth, fish eyes, and it even had a fish tail! The ultrasound seemingly confirmed the story and Kimberly was left with no choice but to wait until she gives ‘birth’ to the strange creature.
But her story reached Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (One at Heart, Jessica Soho). A team was sent to the island to bring Kimberly to another doctor for a second opinion.
After performing an ultrasound on the young woman, this doctor explained that Kimberly had ovarian cyst that needs to be removed soon as it is growing aggressively. The doctor also explained that though the photo from the first ultrasound seemed to look like a fish, such things could easily happen during a scan.
Legazpi City Hospital promised to shoulder the costs of Kimberly’s operation but she still needs financial assistance for other needs, including the tests she needs to undergo before the surgery.
