MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national team, Gilas Pilipinas faces tough and familiar opponent South Korea in their do-or-die quarterfinal match on Monday, August 27, in the 18th Asian Games at the Gelora Bung Karno Basketball Hall. Watch the game live via streaming here.
Coach Yeng Guiao and Jordan Clarkson-led squad will try to break the spell against Koreans in order to advance to the medal round, where the loser is relegated to the consolation round.
In the past years, Team Pilipinas has been on the losing end and suffered defeat to the Koreans in the 2014 Incheon Asiad. Meanwhile, Philippines won over South Korea in 2013 in the FIBA Asia Championship at the MOA Arena.
UPDATE: Philippines exits Asian Games with a loss against Korea
Guiao said the Nationals are ready for the big game and hopeful for the good result.
“It’s the big game and we’re ready to play Korea. I feel good about this game. My feeling—as I’ve said of this game—it is even. Although I feel we have a good chance against the Koreans,” Guiao told ABS-CBN Sports.
Former PBA import Ricardo Ratliffe leads Korean team, averaging nearly 24 points with 13 rebounds in the eliminations, finished on top in Group A with a perfect 3-0 record. They also have shooters Lee Jung Hyun, Kim Sunhyung, Heo Ung, Heo Ilyoung and Jeon Junbeom and Kang Sangjae.
But Guiao believes no Korean can stop Clarkson on a single defensive coverage. The Cleveland Cavaliers player had a sparkling debut against China, tallying 28 points on 5/13 three pointers to go along with 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
"I don't think they also have a matchup for Jordan," said Guiao.
The knockout game against the defending Asian Games champs is set 10 a.m. (11 a.m. Manila time). It will be aired live on ESPN5 (TV5) and on ESPN.com via live streaming.
