MANILA, Philippines – On May 14, 2018 (Monday) Barangay and SK Elections (BSKE), 41,948 out of 42,044 barangays will be holding a regular election, excluding 96 barangays in Marawi City, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) announced.
In the past 5 years, the Barangay polls were postponed twice while the SK polls which was scheduled October 2013 were postponed four times.
Barangay Elections
There are 57,378,380 registered voters for the Barangay Elections.
Based on Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and COMELEC data, 9 out of 10 Filipinos (18 years old and above) are registered voters.
Among the 57 million registered voters for the Barangay Elections, Luzon has the most number of registered voters with 22,187,867 (38.67%), followed by Visayas with 15,281,354 (26.63%), while Mindanao has 13,267,132 (23.12%) voters. Lastly, National Capital Region comprised 11.58% of the registered voters.
Of the 57 million registered voters for the Barangay Elections, 51 percent or 29,545,282 are females while 49 percent or 27,833,098 are males.
The number of women candidates during 2018 and 2013 are almost equal, while male candidates for 2018 decreased by 12% from 2013.
SK Elections
Republic Act 10742 or the SK Reform Act which was signed into law in January 2016 expanded the age bracket of the SK voters from 15-21 years old to 15-30 years old. Hence, SK voters are straddling two age groups: 15-17 and 18-30. The latter can vote both for SK and Barangay Elections.
There are a total of 20,626,220 million Filipino youth voters aged 15 to 30 years old. SK voters comprised 35% of the total registered voters in the Philippines.
Based on PSA and COMELEC data, 6 out of 10 Filipino youth (15-30 years old) are registered voters.
Among the 20 million youth registered voters for the Sangguniang Kabataan Elections, Luzon has the most number of youth voters with 7,676,907 (37.22%), followed by Visayas with 5,829,407 (28.26%), while Mindanao has 5,065,674 (24.56%) voters. Lastly, National Capital Region comprised 9.96% or 2,054,232 of the registered youth voters.
Of the 20 million youth voters, 51 percent were female while 49 percent were male.
In year 2018, there is a percent decrease of 31% in the number of SK female candidates against election year 2010.
Male candidates for 2018 also decreased by 3% since election year 2010.
