MANILA, Philippines – “Education is the key to success.”
In many places such as the Philippines, there is this notion that you only succeed in life if you complete a college education. This is the reason why most parents would do everything they can to send their children to school.
Hans Alcanzare was among those children lucky enough to have parents who sacrificed everything to send them to school – and after he and his siblings completed their college education and got themselves jobs, they made their mother ‘graduate’ from working and enjoy a grand tour to several countries. Isn’t that sweet?
Hans was only 6 years old when his mother went to work in Hong Kong. As a young kid, he could not fully understand why his mother had to leave him and his six siblings, even if she explained that she was doing this to provide for their needs and to ensure that they have a better future.
For 20 long years, Hans’ mother labored in Hong Kong, making sure her kids will have a better life.
Her efforts and sacrifices were not in vain. Even though the family experienced their fair share of trials and challenges, they all managed to pull it through.
In her 20 years as overseas Filipino worker (OFW), she was able to send her kids to school. Her kids have all completed their college degrees! She has a licensed teacher, a certified public accountant, a registered nurse, a civil engineer, a registered master plumber, a pharmacist and midwife, and an information technologist! Wow.
Hans decided to surprise their mom, gifting her a grand trip to several countries, including Japan, Singapore, and Dubai, and finally bringing her back home for good.
“It’s your graduation, Mom!” Hans wrote as he fetched his mother at the airport. “It’s time to go home.”
It was a truly wonderful ‘graduation’ for this hardworking mother! How awesome it would be if all mothers could also enjoy a similar ‘graduation’ celebration, right?
