MANILA, Philippines - A graduating student in Bacolor, Pampanga took his own life allegedly due to grade problems.
Kenneth Masa Ramos committed suicide last April 4, 2018 reportedly after his university, Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) prevented him from graduating. The 27-year-old student allegedly had incomplete or failing grades.
His mother, Yolanda Masa revealed that Kenneth drank poison to end his depression over the university’s decision. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mrs. Masa, an OFW in Saudi Arabia went home to witness his son’s graduation, only to find him dead. She said, “Hindi ko maintindihan kasi walang sakit sa magulang… ‘yong ikaw ‘yong maghahatid sa anak mo. Hindi ko nakakasama ‘yong anak ko sa totoo lang, ‘yong matagal. Siyempre nagta-trabaho [ako], naiiwan siya dito.”
Relatives of Kenneth contradicted the university’s claim that the student had failing grades. His sister, Joe Laine Reyes, expressed her disappointment, “Ako mismo tinatanong ko siya, ‘Kuya, ano pa ‘yong mga naiiwan mo?’ Kasi, ako, galing ako sa school nila, do’n ako nag-graduate kaya alam ko ‘yong patakaran ng school.”
The deceased’s mother will also be seeking clarification from the university on why Kenneth’s name was included in the list of graduates when he had incomplete grades.
School and CHED responds
Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) had recently sent their statement about the unfortunate incident. They clarified and confirmed that Kenneth was not really supposed to graduate due to seven back subjects.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in Region III stated that they will conduct an investigation about the incident.
